ARKASA is found in the South-western department of Karpathos, opposite from the island of Kasos, pops up between the capital city Pigadia and the graphic Finiki. A real small town, with so many natural beauties but also with rapid development in each sector and specifically in the qualitative tourism.
The permanent residents, following the rythm of current season, escaped perceptibly, so much from the older employment in Agricultural and Veterinarian, and from the old plague of ommigration (with few exceptions) investing in relevant enterprises, in and round the village. By an off-hand glance to the village you can see today amazing new houses that lend certain elements of modernism but also "johnny-come-lately".
Of course except the inevitable "turn" to Tourist enterprises, the buildings, where Arkasa is famous for the lot and good contractors and craftsmen - in all lengths and widths of Karpathos until Crete - it did not cease ever to constitute a thrift, neither even the fishery for very few people.
Arkasa is composed from many Hotels, Rented Apartments and Rooms, capable to entertain a lot of visitors. You can find also Restaurants, Cafeterias, Club, Mini Market, Hairdresser's, Confectionery, Offices to rent a car or bike, Butcher's shop, Jeweller's ... until Greengrocer's shop! You can say that is not absent almost nothing from Arkasa.
By a world voting that took place few years ago via Internet in an electronic page of the Greek Government, AGIOS NIKOLAOS at ARKASA WAS NOMINATED 7TH MORE BEAUTIFUL AND CLEANER BEACH in GREECE!
HISTORY
Recent archaeological studies proved that the History of Karpathos begins from 10.000 eg! Of course 500 year before Crete existed culture in Karpathos that has roots from Middle East according to valid documents of Will Durent from 1947!
Ancient city ARKESSIA, built little more southernly from the current ARKASA was one of the four ancient cities of Karpathos: ARKESSIA the ARKESSINI (the name emanated from then king ARKESIO), VRIKOUS (OLYMPUS), POTIDAION or POSSI (PIGADIA), NISIROS (SARIA) that they constituted according to the Ancient Greek History (1494 eg) the TETRAPOLIS.
Then FINIKES said that they discovered the islands Karpathos-Saria and were installed first in them. Later they gave also their name in the current FINIKI. At ARKASA are even saved today, the ruins of an old christian season and ancient graves of Mycenae Season!
AGIA SOFIA (AGIA ANASTASIA of 5th century) with her Historical baptistery where she was saved from the PIRATES. PALIOKASTRO (CITADEL of Arkesia, or OLD TOWER) is found in the top of village. KATAFI (Shelter of the civilians with the acquaintance undergrounds tunnel-crossing) in order to avoid the oppression of the pirates and the known medieval slave trade and the women's bargain and a lot of other interesting "discoveries": Marbles, Mosaic, Ancient walls, Vessels, Graves of German Italian dignitaries of Possession that are rescued.
There are also enough - for unacceptable reasons - in the Archaeological Museum of Rhodes and certain small samples in the recently builded MUSEUM of ARKASA that would be supposed to be more organised from the Local principle. The history of ARKESIA was an object of study and theses from the University of Athens, Greek Archaeological Company, the Company of Karpathian Studies and object for various Historical books from Carpathians and not only, particular Archaeological Studies between like Jacod Rich, Manolis Melas etc.
